Chaplet to the Holy Spirit

The word chaplet comes from the French word for Rosary, which is chapelet, but the term has now come to be associated with prayers which use prayer beads.

This Chaplet of the Holy Spirit uses 50 prayer beads.  It begins with 3 beads, followed by 5 sets of 7 beads, each separated by 6 sets of 2 beads.

How to pray the Chaplet

On the first 3 beads: 1st: the Sign of the Cross, 2nd: An Act of Contrition, 3rd: Prayer Come, Holy Spirit (see below)

On the 2 beads: 1st: Our Father, 2nd: Hail Mary

On the 7 beads: 7 Glory Be

Repeat for each set while meditating on one of the Mysteries  (see below)

Follow with the Creed as a profession of faith

Finish back at the initial 3 beads by praying one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be for the intentions of the Pope.

Meaning of the Sets of Beads

The five sets honor the five Wounds of Jesus, which are the Fountains of Grace which the Holy Spirit imparts to mankind.

The seven 'Glory Be' in each of the five sets honor the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety, and Fear of the Lord.

The six 'Our Fathers' plus the six 'Hail Marys', represent the 12 fruits of the Holy Spirit: Charity, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Generosity, Gentleness, Faithfulness, Modesty, Self-Control, and Chastity.

Mysteries

'Mysteries' for meditation during each of the five sets of beads:

1st set: Jesus is born of the Blessed Virgin Mary by the Holy Spirit

“And the angel said to her in reply, “The holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God..” (Luke 1:35)

2nd set: The Spirit of the Lord rested upon Jesus when he was baptized

“After Jesus was baptized, he came up from the water and behold, the heavens were opened for him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon him.” (Matthew 3:16)

3rd set: Jesus is led by the Spirit into the desert

“Filled with the holy Spirit,* Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert.” (Luke 4:1)

4th set: The Holy Spirit in the Church

“And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.” (Acts 2:2-4)

5th set: The Holy Spirit in the soul of the just

“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?” (1 Corinthians 6:19) “Do not quench the Spirit.” (1 Thessalonians 5:19) and “do not grieve the holy Spirit of God, with which you were sealed for the day of redemption.” (Ephesians 4:30)

Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love.  Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created and You shall renew the face of the earth.  O God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful,  grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations, through Christ Our Lord, Amen.
